Science instead of superstition.

Culture isn't a fuzzy intangible anymore. For 60 years, the social sciences have refined large mathematical models that accurately quantify and predict how groups of people function and interact. Well known researchers like Daniel Kahneman didn’t get their Nobel Prizes for the fun books we all know and love, but for researching hard maths that make sense of seemingly random behaviors.

With big data and machine learning, we now can measure and even predict team behavior with previously unimaginable accuracy. This requires a huge readjustment: our generations still grew up with many oversimplified ideas about temperament and character. That's why our focus has always been group dynamics instead of individual achievement.

This is, of course, significantly more challenging: While psychology can measure a bit more than 100 traits of individuals, sociology can quantify almost 600 properties of groups. This is to be expected, since a group of people is significantly more complex than a single person – it combines the dynamics of each individual with all the ways they can influence each other. Understanding this is elementary to understand how teams truly work and how to craft a sustainably productive setup.

The key to a productive organization is therefore designing and running social systems that stimulate and sustain certain desired behaviors, and not fostering an individual's capability only to drop them into an environment where their fancy new talents can't unfold.
